Man ordered to pay more than $36,000 for grounding flight at OIA

A New Jersey man handed over a check today worth more than $36,000 as punishment for grounding a Spirit Airlines flight in July.

Andrew P. Brestle, 39, was a passenger on a July 10 flight from Orlando to Atlantic City, N.J., that was delayed because of bad weather. Brestle, who had been vacationing at Walt Disney World with his family, panicked and asked to get off of the plane, according to court records. When he wasn't allowed to, Brestle allegedly said: "What if I had a bomb?"

Brestle, who suffers from bipolar disorder, was sentenced today in federal court to two years probation and required to pay Spirit Airlines $36,787.98 - the cost of canceling the flight and rescheduling its passengers.


He had pleaded guilty in September to interfering with a flight-crew member.
